Let’s Join Together (Key KL019) 1973 UK *
Kevin’s high-pitched voice takes a little getting used to and comes across as sort of a British version of Benny Hester. His first album on the Key label turned out to be his best, providing a pleasant mix of rock n roll, pop, folk and country. Kevin has written some intriguing song titles here, including ‘Dai’, ‘Today I Walked A Million Miles’, the hard-rocking ‘Soap Box Opera’ and ‘Pity The Poor Revolutionary’, the latter enhanced with bubblegum organ and a quasi-reggae beat. Quite a bit of variety here, ranging from the tough mid-tempo electric blues-rock growl of ‘Born Again News’ to kickin’ country (‘Mary Mary’ and ‘Higher Power’) to the spacious Phil Spector-ish pop-rock of ‘Smile, Jesus Loves You’. Rich dreamy synthesizer backing on several of the songs. Produced by the ubiquitous John Pantry, who also provides piano. (The Archivist, 4th Edition by Ken Scott).
I have not acquired this album yet. Thank you Ken for the front cover photo and track list.
