Loving & Living (Galliard GAL 4001) 1969 UK *
Harvey’s People is a British acoustic foursome consisting of Eileen Greaves, Sheila Sculler, Joan Rayner and Frank Simmons. Loving & Living features twelve songs written by Sister Estelle, a member of the Congregation of Corpus Christi Carmelite Sisters. Typically folky melodies that highlight the brisk harmonies of the three girls, backed by guitar and double bass. Frank’s deep voice doesn’t do a whole lot for me, but he’s only on two cuts. As the back cover states, “The songs on this record are about life – life as it is here and now”, including ‘Melissa’, ‘Mr. Gallantry’, ‘Now I Walk In The Dark’, ‘And It’s Time To Go Home’ and ‘There Is A World’, as well as more directly religious titles like ‘We’re The People Of God’, ‘A Song To Our Lady’ and ‘The Drums Of Calvary’. Piano on a couple tracks, including the slow-jazz torch song ‘Harvey’. Eileen was also a member of The Sowers, Kevin Mayhew Singers, Flame and Sacred Heart Choir. One of the earliest releases on this collected UK folk label. (The Archivist, 4th Edition by Ken Scott).
