Marianna (no label F-72-RHL-2) 1972
Catholic folk production with a good deal of island flavor and lines like “den we dance de land and raise our voices fi Jesus Christ” along with references to “Fadda”, “bredda” and “sista”. I don’t know the name for this particular dialect but it can be found throughout Ho Lung’s lyrics. Some of his assisting friends include Nick Covino (who wrote a couple of the songs) and Paul Quinlan, a prominent figure in the early Catholic folk scene. Mixed in with the more percussive guitar-bongos-flute tropical rhythms are some real pretty acoustic ballads – ‘Parting Thought’ and the title track in particular are very moving with delicate lead vocals. Dedicated to the Society Of Jesus. (The Archivist, 4th Edition by Ken Scott).
I have not acquired this album yet. Thank you Ken for the front cover photo.
