Illimitable (Curious Cupid MY-8401) 1984

Writers and performers from the Toledo, Ohio area pooled their talents for this noteworthy diverse interdenominational custom recording. Many of the songs on the first side have either the feel of the ‘70s Catholic guitars-and-flute acoustic style or simple coffeehouse folksinger moods. The side closes with ‘Seven Voices Of Heaven’, an unusual a cappella piece with seven voices singing different phrases in different keys. Synthesizers come into play on the artsier sometimes new-age-ish side two with dreamy tracks like ‘Laudae Domino’, ‘Absence Of Gravity’ and the adrift instrumental ‘Rothko Sound’. ‘Another Step Further’ has a catchy upbeat melody and sprightly synth riffs that bring to mind Steve Winwood. Electric guitar leads can be found on ‘Psalm 96’ (a bit out-of-tune) and the folk-rocking ‘The Meaning Of It All’. An interesting sometimes experimental project of high hopes that ultimately succeeds despite the off-key singing and amateur vibes.     (The Archivist, 4th Edition by Ken Scott).
