Sense Of Direction (EMI Custom YPRX-1276) 1975? Australia *

So many of the best Australian Jesus music lps seem to have come from the EMI Custom label, including Kindekrist, Flock and 4 Company. Be sure to add this stirring folk/psych jewel from Ignis Christi to the list. Sense Of Direction features cutting-edge tuneful acoustic songs interlaced with soft garagey electric guitar leads, wah-wah pedal, deeply-felt male lead vocals and dreamy penetrating female backing vocals. Analogous to your top trippy UK electric folk privates, artfully coupled with floating ‘60s underground pop/psych intentions (including touches of the melodic melancholy quietude of Rubber Soul and Velvet Underground). Creative chord changes, tempo variations and sincere lyrics are found throughout the album on tracks like ‘Peace’, ‘Does Anybody Care?’, ‘Show Me The Way’, ‘Every Knee Shall Bow/The Lord Said’ and ‘He Always Tells Me’. Moods range from the achingly beautiful ‘Cilla’ to the solemn minor-key ‘Can I Ask You?’ (which includes chilling murmurs of him” from the girls) to the optimistic closing number ‘Lord We Love You’. All ten songs were written by  member John King, with assistance from Mark Brett on a few. Insanely rare, but totally worth scouring all of Australia for that elusive copy.     (The Archivist, 4th Edition by Ken Scott).
