Don’t Fence Me In (SLP 101) 1980

These Children’s Bible Hour records are sometimes mildly entertaining. The format is usually four Leave It To Beaver type stories with a Christian twist. I had to list this one for the ‘He Took My Lickin’ skit, A new schoolteacher is brought in to handle a rowdy class. Rules are laid down and the consequences for breaking them explained When Bill admits to stealing Jim’s lunch, the verdict is ten spankings in front of the class. Bill is skinny, weak and comes from a poor family, but hey, rules is rules. The honorable Jim, however, steps in to receive Bill’s spankings. As the teacher delivers each clearly audible swat with the paddle, there’s a surge of ascending organ accompaniment, along with sobs and exclamations of “ooh!” from the rest of the class. Teacher then goes on to illustrate how all this represents Jesus taking our punishment. Ah, for the good old days. (The Archivist, 4th edition by Ken Scott).

I have not acquired this album yet.  Thank you Ken for the front cover photo.
