The Real Thing (Artronics ART-7033) 1973?
The Real Thing’s self-titled album adds organ and female vocals to the line-up. Not quite as satisfying overall as Artwork, but there are a couple pleasant surprises. First is a crude cover of ‘Jesus Is Just Alright’ (here titled ‘Suite: Jesus’) that has a nice organ rock sound, phased rhythm guitar, heavy percussion and a cool basement electric guitar solo. Also of note is the somber ballad ‘Traveling Man’ which slowly drones along with some effective distorted fuzz guitar leads. Those two tracks alone make the album seriously worth hunting down. Other selections include ‘No Songs Of Sadness’, ‘Hokie’, plus covers of Godspell’s ‘Save The People’ and Judee Sill’s ‘Crossmaker’. St. Paul, Minnesota studio. (The Archivist, 4th edition by Ken Scott).
Thank you Donald for the rear cover photo and the track list.
