Revelation (Emmaus REV-001) 1979
Talented nine-member jazz-rock outfit with artful song structures and soulful female lead vocals. The songs typically have a strong backbone of electric bass, electric piano, synthesizer, acoustic and electric guitars, organ and drums, with trumpet, flugelhom, trombone, sax and flute fleshing out the sound. Variety of moods and tempos, including lively and upbeat (‘Giving It All Up’), silky and mid-tempo (‘Monuments’), soft and breezy (‘Where It’s At’), heavily funked (‘Morning Star’) and slow and bluesy (‘Nightmare’). ‘More Than Four/Four’ and His Song’ are both carried along by snappy 3/4 jazz grooves. Acoustic guitar takes the focus on the ballads ‘What Was It Like?’ and ‘Luke 23’. Decent soloing opportunities for just about everybody, including a few notable electric guitar leads. Erica Friday’s vibrant lead vocals definitely add spice to the project. Custom record from Phoenix, Arizona. Superb cover art. (The Archivist, 4th edition by Ken Scott).
I have not acquired this album yet. Thank you Donald for the rear cover photo and the track list.
