Pilgrim (New Zealand)

Not to be confused with the UK project of the same name, here’s a completely different rock musical based on John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress, recorded by students at Tawa College in New Zealand. Has that primitive no—budget home-made youth musical feel, alternating various lead vocalists with ensemble singing. Much of the album is predictably mediocre and piano-based, but the drums have a lot of enthusiasm, the organ adds depth, and crude basement rock/electric guitar edges surface a couple times to nudge up the interest level. My favorite was ‘Giant Despair’s Castle’ with its heavy downer Vibe. Other intriguing titles among the fourteen tracks are ‘The Slough Of Despond’, ‘The Valley Of The Shadow Of Death’, ‘The Hill Of Difficulty’, ‘The Delectable Mountains’, ‘Pilgrim Meets Sloth’ and ‘The River Of Death’. Appears to be a live performance, as you can hear occasional clapping,  coughing, stuff dropping, etc. Written by the students under the direction of Christopher Norton. (The Archivist, 4th edition by Ken Scott).

I have not acquired this album yet.
