Molly And The Salt Shakers (Prestige 740914) 1974?
Crimony, I’m gonna have to start a whole new section just for all these frickin’ dummies. Molly Fairchild’s got two of them and boy what a freaky looking pair they are. Johnny The Baptist has freckles so big they look more like liver spots, while Dolly gazes out vacuously with her ditzy ‘60s big-hair bimbo look. This custom album was recorded live before an audience and features two side-long dialogues, with Mississippi accents supplying an endless stream of corny jokes. Consider the wisdom of Johnny: “I think Christians ought to be so happy and so full of the Holy Spirit that if a mosquito bites him it’ll fly away singing ‘There’s Power In The Blood’.” Dolly gets to sing a couple songs, but she’s not about to unseat’ Little Marcy. The sequence with Johnny enthusiastically preaching over-top a traditional recording of ‘The King Is Coming’ is absolutely priceless. I tell ya though, after about the tenth squeaky high-pitched “JEE-sus! ! !” I’m ready to burst out the door with a machine gun and pump a few rounds into the sky while screaming at the top of my lungs. (The Archivist, 4th edition by Ken Scott).
I have not acquired this album yet.
