Prepare Ye The Way (Spirit Song CS-3501) 1975?
One of those two-album life-of-Christ rock opera deals, more than likely inspired by the Godspell and Jesus Christ Superstar phenomenon. Not a format I generally get too excited about, mainly because it usually implies orchestration and choral harmonies, plus the lead singers tend to have Broadway or operatic voices as opposed to rock-and-roll voices. Prepare Ye The Way has all of these characteristics, but I gotta say there’s some serious energy going on here at times, and on more than one occasion it gets intensely heavy with the surging organ and psychy fuzz and wah-wah guitar. Unfortunately there are also a lot of less interesting passages with strings, horns, woodwinds, piano, semi-traditional vocals and all, although overall the project still retains the unpolished atmosphere of a live performance. Includes some incredibly pained pleas from Jesus on the cross, dramatically voiced by Steve Fry (who also composed the work). A custom production of Calvary Community Church in San Jose, California, recorded at the Creative Sound Studio. Gate-fold cover with illustration of Jesus wearing the crown of thorns. Not to be confused with a completely different two disc Scripture In Song production of the same name by David and Dale Garrett. (The Archivist, 4th edition by Ken Scott).
I have not acquired this album yet. Thank you Donald for the rear cover photo.
