Promised Land - Out Of The Darkness

Any time an obscure custom record contains a 12-minute track my curiosity is immediately piqued. Tums out this 5-person Monroeville, Pennsylvania outfit delivers a fairly accessible brand of soft-rock with jazz-rock and progressive angles both working to keep things interesting. The spacey synths that figure heavily in the arrangements combined with electric guitar leads and female vocals often make for some similarities to other ‘80s jazz-oriented groups like Tamarack, Omega Sunrise and September. The ballads can sometimes drag but at least there are no sappy strings. Stuff like that looooooooooong progressive title track, however, is where Promised Land really shines. Eight songs total, all written by Steve and/or Noreen Rose. (The Archivist, 4th edition by Ken Scott).
