Hooked On Him (Gospel Jubilee PM 74031) 1974?
The title track of this nine-person co—ed California group’s lp opens with a cheery robust guitars-and—piano folk-rock sound, not too far off from ministry bands like Armageddon Experience and later New Folk, albeit a tad garagier. But suddenly this animated drum solo kicks in, spawning some speculation that there was at least one closet ‘In-A-Gadda—Da— Vida’ listener in the band. The two Carmichael and three Crouch tunes are pretty much what you’d expect, but it’s the remaining five originals where Soul Purpose rises above the staleness that usually characterizes matching-gowns—and-shirts outfits. ‘Christian Be Strong’, ‘Give All The Love’, ‘Questions And Answers’, ‘Left On Shore’ and the aforementioned title track all have moments of brilliance, including good electric and/or acoustic guitar leads, some touches of wah-wah, catchy folk-rock melodies and a general impression that these folks wanted to step out a little. I’d say they succeeded. 1000 made. (The Archivist, 4th edition by Ken Scott).
I have not acquired this album yet. Thank you George for the front and rear cover photos.
