Second Mile (Superior S-10300) 1977
Horn rock to be honest is not my favorite style, but there are a few that are worth hanging on to. Some that come to mind are Crimson Bridge, First Gear and of course Liberation Suite. Though I’m tempted to call Illinois’ 3rd Day a poor man’s version of the latter you could probably add them to the list, too. Eight guys in the group, two that play trumpet and two more on trombone. Mostly on the light end including a cover of 2nd Chapter Of Acts’ ‘When The Son Comes Over The Hill’. A couple adult contemporary type things (such as Floria’s ‘Thank You, Lord’) and tame jazzy pop that’s kept safe by the custom vibes and lack of strings, but there are also some more movin’ tracks like ‘Thunder N’ Lightnin’ (with vocal assistance from Russ Taft), ‘Jesus Is My Light’, ‘Now’s The Time’ and ‘Father Is Searchin’. (The Archivist, 4th edition by Ken Scott).
I have not acquired this album yet. Thank you Donald for the rear cover photo and track list.
