Upstairs, Downstairs (no label JS-101) 1976
Upstairs, Downstairs presents two different sides of the student parish at Boston’s St. Clement’s Catholic Church. The first side contains songs sung at the Celebration of Mass, while the flip consists of music from their coffee-house. Side one is predictably the lesser side, a Great Commission Co. type of contemporary gospel sound with ensemble vocals, heavy on the brass. The opening ‘Celebration’ does have a respectable rock-jazz groove, including solos from sax, flute and piano. The coffee-house program is much more interesting. There are two instrumentals focusing on piano (‘Whispering Of The Trees’ and ‘Follow Us’), plus three excellent original songs in a folk/acoustic style (‘Precious Lady’, ‘Like You Used To’ and ‘Fighters And Lovers’). The latter two have a progressive Joni Mitchell feel, with creative flute and percussion accompaniment. (The Archivist, 4th edition by Ken Scott).
I have not acquired this album yet. Thank you Donald for locating a track list and for the rear cover photo.
