A Folk Passion (County COUN LP 160/161) 1969 UK *
This is an earlier custom recording of the same songs, presented in a much more primitive home-made environment. Ultra low-fi cavernous echoey sound – the lead vocals are clear and the drums are exceptionally loud (which is kind of cool), but most everything else is sort of squashed into the background. I’m assuming Cambridge Twentieth Century Church Light Music Group (abbreviated “C20” on the front cover) is an earlier incarnation of 20th Century – most of the players are different, but there are a few that appear on both lps. Beautiful eerie female chorus on ‘Sunset’ and in the middle of ‘The Purple Robe’. A bit of crude electric guitar spicing up ‘Manana’. Words by Mike Colley, music by John Lockley. (The Archivist, 4th edition by Ken Scott).
I have not acquired this album yet. Thank you Donald for the rear cover photo and the track list.
