Nightcall (Crusade Enterprises LPS 1300) 1980
Excellent acoustic rock custom from gentle—voiced singer who recalls Dave Mattson, Dennis Ryder, or the simple unplugged side of John Denver. Nightcall features Dave on 6—string guitar, 12-string guitar, 11string guitar (?), bass guitar and percussion, plus others on drums and “percussives” (the latter is credited to Thee Synyster Mynyster). Beautiful relaxed out-doorsy finger—picked acoustic vibe to songs like ‘Jesus I Come’, ‘If I Could’ and the eight-minute ‘Thomas’. ‘Theme From Nightcall’ and the up-tempo ‘Lani’s Song’ both have an edgy minor-key presence bordering on “folk/psych”. A couple ultra-short tracks: the instrumental ‘Koala’ (which has some cool reverse effects) and ‘Gazelle’ which features electronically raised “chipmunk” vocals harmonizing “I love you Lord” (I at first thought my turntable had jumped to 78 rpm). All ten songs written by Dave, who according to the back cover is also known as the “Mad Australian? Primitive blue color-pencil cover art. Custom lp from Montgomery, Illinois. (The Archivist, 4th edition by Ken Scott).
I have not acquired this album yet. Thank you Donald for finding a rear cover photo and the song list.
