A Year In The Life (Fanfare FR 2153) 1976 UK *
Maximum charm at work in this male/female hippie UK folk group’s excellent custom recording. Strummed tunes with acoustic guitars, sincere harmonies and top-notch original song-writing. Several songs have a solemn rninor—key mood, including ‘Who Will Bear My Cross?’, ‘Gethsernane’ and ‘He Said — I Said’. ‘You Can’t Take My Jesus From Me’ has a warm sunny presence, while ‘Have You Seen The Glory Of The Lord?’ possesses a fragile melancholy tone. Also some touching ballads like ‘Traditional God’ and ‘The Whispering Silence’. They sound a lot like Parchment on the brisk closing track ‘He’s Coming Back – Someday!’. Three guys and two girls from St. Martin’s Church Centre in Cambridge. All songs written by member Bob Short. Right up there with Aslan, Sanctus, Carpenter’s Apprentice, Exordiurn, Reality Folk, etc., which puts them among of the best of the whole UK folk scene. Same local label as Eleri, Janet & Diane’s The Answer, (The Archivist, 4th edition by Ken Scott).
I have not acquired this album yet.
