Refiner’s Fire (FOJ-02) 1979?

Friends Of Jesus - Refiner's Fire

Some schizophrenic fellows from Columbus, Ohio who can’t decide if they’re The Imperials or Styx. The pop/MOR/gospel and hyper-easy listening ballads here are the kind of thing I usually don’t wanna touch with a thirty-nine-and—a—half-foot pole, but the slick heavily—orchestrated disco numbers like “All My Love, All My Life’ and ‘You’re Love Is A Fire’ are wholly capable of inspiring Travolta-esque dance-floor maneuvers. And then there’s that Yes/Styx-ish art rocker ‘Wake Up Sleeper’ that opens side two with synthesizers, piano, lead electric guitar and stacked harmonies. It’s completely out of place but impeccably done — I still can’t believe how well they pull it off. A whole album of tracks like that and paw!, this thing would easily cha—ching up into the 300 buck realm. But alas it’s a one-shot deal (three if you can stomach disco). Includes covers of Sweet Comfort Band’s ‘I Love You With My Life’, The Imperials’ ‘Sonlight’ and Gaither’s ‘I’m Gonna Be There’. This is their second album. (The Archivist, 4th edition by Ken Scott).
