St Joseph's Folk Mass Group - Alleluia

A lot of these St. fill-in-the-blank Folk Group albums inevitably turn out to be duds, but every now and then one comes along that makes you glad you invested that thrift store dollar. What sets this Pittsburgh custom above the usual folk ensemble blahs is the electric guitar work of songwriter, arranger, director and producer John Maione. Punchy rhythm chords, phasing and wah—wah often bring a rock or mild psych edge to the music, putting these folks on the level of acts like God Unlimited. There’s an incredible near 3-minute hard—rocking guitar solo on ‘We Come To Your Banquet, Lord’, segueing into the wispy soft acoustic reverie of ‘Thank You, Lord’. Cool organ as well on ‘Taking Him For Granted’. Nice dreamy flute and cymbally percussion adding atmosphere to several tracks. Vocals are on the amateurish end, but not especially distracting. Subtitled An Original Mass Of Joy. (The Archivist, 4th edition by Ken Scott).
