It’s For Real (King’s Center LP 518) 1973

King's Children, The - It's For Real

Respectable home-made electric folk-rock sounds from Springfield, Illinois five-person outfit. The electric guitar really helps bring the group to life, particularly the west-coast psych flair that turns up on excellent rural-edged tracks like ‘The Gathering Of The Church’ and ‘Valley Of Decision’. The title song and ‘You Don’t Know What You’re Missing’ both have a jangly electric quality that hints back to the ‘60s. Andrae Crouch tunes like ‘Through It All’, ‘It Won’t Be Long’ and ‘Satisfied’ (with aggressive drum pounding) get better than average treatment here, but the best cuts are leader Mark Drake’s originals. Member Pam Haak’s ‘The Lord Is My Strength’ with its rhythmic piano chords also deserves mention. Harmonica on a couple songs. Cover features a crude black drawing of Christ’s impaled bleeding hand against a red background. 300 pressed. (The Archivist, 4th edition by Ken Scott).
