The Fishermen (Jam J1005) 1974? Australia *

Fishermen, The (Australia)

Satisfying electric country folk production with a few rockabilly twists from male Australian trio. Covers of songs by Hemphill, Tripp and Goodman suggest that there are might be some gospel vibes hangin’ around (there are), but it’s compensated by the natural stripped-down rural combination of electric guitar and rhythm section. They get lively grooves going on ‘Been A Lot Of Changes’, “I’m Persuaded To Believe’ and Tom T Hall’s ‘Me & Jesus’, the latter’s dual wah-wah action providing glimmers of Joyful Noise’s Electric Gospel. Also covers of Kris Kristofierson (“Help Me’), Johnny Cash (‘Belshazzar’) and Andrae Crouch (a jangly folk-rock version of ‘Somebody Told Me’). Low-tech string synthesizer accompanying on a couple songs. Can’t say it really sounds “Australian”, but a decent record nonetheless. (The Archivist, 4th edition by Ken Scott).
