Country Melody (Fish no #) 1978
Finally found a copy of this their first lp about a week after I penned the above. Sure enough it’s every bit as good as Desert Plains, with a good mix of originals and covers. Brisk invigorated moods set the tone right from the start via the trio of the title track, the minor-key instrumental ‘Hebrew Shuffle’ and ‘Lonesome Heartache Blues’, all self-penned tunes with fascinating solo action from mandolin, banjo and acoustic guitar. Also in the lively category are covers of “Rocky Top’ and the fiddle-aflame ‘Irish Spring/Arkansas Traveler’. And if you need a moment to catch your breath, side two has the easygoing ‘Good Cheer’, along with a rendition of The Eagles’ ballad ‘Desperado’. Another original song ‘Tum Around’ lays down the gospel message in bluegrass fashion before closing with the Talbot Brothers’ ‘Comin’ Home To Jesus’. Smokin’ music from a talented gang. (The Archivist, 4th edition by Ken Scott).
Thank you Donald for the cover photos.
