Someone Greater (Amariah AM RLP-001) 1980

Clearly one of the best Christian male folk/folkrock duos l’ve heard. Virginians Bill Kaffenberger and Steve Antonacci sound right at home on this excellent private press, whether they’re performing quiet acoustic ballads (‘For You And Me’), exploring dreamy 12-string moods (‘Early Spring’), strumming along to a jangly percussive groove (‘Rich Man And The Beggar’) or plugging in to a soft electric folkrock sound (‘Presence Of The Lord’). Fender Rhodes, Arp synthesizer, bass and drums complement the stirring harmonies and glistening interplay of acoustic and electric guitars. Similar to, but ultimately better than Stewart & Kyle, Christian Stephens, Gospel Seed, Abraham & Moses and the like, with a hint of Simon & Garfunkel in there as well. Totally devoid of the overproduction and smarmy qualities that often seem to tarnish this genre.    (The Archivist, 4th edition by Ken Scott).
