Reaching (Iodine J265) 1972

Joyful Word, The - Reaching

Home-made folk sounds from members of St. Peter’s in Saratoga Springs, New York. The portions featuring the whole ensemble are hit and miss – the misses sound cheap and strained while the hits often strike a resemblance to God Unlimited with their moody vocals and spacious songwriting style. The best tracks, however, comprise approximately one third of the album and feature either solo performances or a guy/gal trio with guitar and banjo. Especially lovely is Doreen Massey’s plaintive ballad ‘Long Hard Winter’. All but one of the nineteen songs were written by group members. Overall if you like the Catholic folk sound then this is worthy of your attention. Cool primitive home-made cover of green tree, sun and logo over yellow background.   (The Archivist, 4th edition by Ken Scott).
