Good News (Word WST-8507-LP) 1967?
Obviously this ‘60s British pop star needs little introduction. But maybe like me you’ve tended to shy away from albums like this, figuring Cliff would be toning down his style for the Christian market. While it’s true that Good News contains mostly traditional hymns and string orchestrated pop ballads, there also happen to be several revved-up hip-swiveling white soul movers and shakers. The title track, ‘We Shall Be Changed’, ‘Go Where I Send Thee’, ‘Mary What You Gonna Name That Pretty Little Baby’ and ‘Get On Board Little Children’ all fall into this category, accelerating forth with brisk electric guitar, hot horns and soulful female bgvs. The back cover tells how he announced his Christianity at a 1966 Billy Graham Crusade in London. Later he starred in a couple Graham movies: Two A Penny and His Land. (The Archivist, 4th edition by Ken Scott).
