Rock Star (Fusion  FUS 7000)  1979  UK *

Good British rock musical based on the story of Christ’s birth, written by Robert Rigby and Stan Hewitt. Rigby is one of seven vocalists here while several musicians provide guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, vibes, mandolin and synthesizer (I recognize Mo Witham from Achor and Wine Of Lebanon). A diverse set encompassing hard rock (‘Taxes’ and ‘Herod Has Spoken’), dreamy minor-key ballads (‘Give Us Shelter’, ‘When He Bleeds’ and ‘Hide From The Light’), funky Southern rock (‘Under The Star’), folk/praise (‘Nativity Song’) country pop (‘To Love The Lord’), even a catchy disco number (‘For You’). ‘King Of Kings’ with its Scots-Irish melody sounds like a dead ringer for Reynard. Nice wah-wah guitar on a few tracks. Closes with a bit of upbeat slide guitar boogie on ‘Rock With Jesus’. Comes in a handsome tri-fold cover. Spine lists the label as Rediffusion.    (The Archivist, 4th edition by Ken Scott).
