Rising Hope  (CR  RH 1061)  1980

Rising Hope

Not the Ohio band, but an obscure male/female folkrock group of seven from South Carolina.  Folky 12-string-and-piano covers of Honeytree (‘Simple Song’ and ‘Lovely Jesus Here I Am’), Jamie Owens (‘Hard Times’ and John Foley (‘The Lord Is My Light’),  plus a number of original songs.  Light electric guitar, synthesizer, bass and drums all in there, too.  The recurrent use of viola is a nice touch, especially when  joined by fuzz guitar on the superb ‘When You Must Sail (Isaiah 43).  Simple b&w cover photo of the group seated on some playground equipment.  Pleasant low-key amateur appeal.    (The Archivist, 4th edition by Ken Scott).
