Psalms (Psalms no#) 1978
It would appear that the Jesus movement reached into Hawaii as evidenced by this excellent compilation album featuring ten artists from the islands. Psalms finds common ground alongside studio collections like Jesus Loves You, Gospel Ship and Gospel Ship 2. The only group I was familiar with was Zion Mountain Folk with ‘Sing For Joy’, a track not on their Light lp. Also playing in that familiar folky country-edged Jesus music style are Just Us (‘Jesus Is The Ticket’, also found on their full-length custom lp) and Mike & Karen Stangel (the harmonica and dobro-backed ‘He’s My Lovin’ Kind’). Holly Phillips contributes a stunningly beautiful acoustic ballad ‘Song For The Sheep’. Also in the folk/acoustic category are Dayspring (‘Lewellyn’s Song’) and Stanley Aoli’s ‘Makua Koana’, a tribute to the preacher who brought the gospel to Hawaii in the 1800s. The ensemble Galadriel sings ‘Song For The Night’, a moving flute-accompanied piece ala God Unlimited. ‘Listen To The Spirit’ and ‘First Day Of Our Lives Together’ are fine piano soft-rock tunes by Ron & Friends and Barry Matsumoto respectively. Dove (not the Myrrh group) gets a nice upbeat folkrock track ‘You’re My Life, My Everything’. Wouldn’t have minded a full-length lp from any of these folks. Sponsored by Honolulu radio station KAIM. (The Archivist, 4th edition by Ken Scott).
