By His Stripes You Are Healed (Word Of Life Community 5016) 1979
Theophilus has a creative gentle style somewhere between folk/praise and light rock, with a faintly detectable “progressive” angle in there somewhere. Soft harmonies (female mostly) are typically backed by acoustic guitar and piano, further enriched at varying times by flute, synthesizer, mellotron, sax, brass, bass and drums. Light jazz vibes on ‘Give Thanks To The Lord’ and ‘Living Waters’ courtesy of the saxophone. The synths sound especially “art-rock”-ish on the closing ‘One Way Ticket’. All eight songs are connected by brief spoken Scripture readings. Similar in some respects to Achor, Wine Of Lebanon, New Song and Outpouring. Two slightly different cover designs depending on if you have the 1979 or 1980 pressing, both depicting a pair of knotted whips. A custom album from Word Of Life Ministries in Chatsworth, California. (The Archivist, 4th edition by Ken Scott).
