The Revellers (Columbia/EMI SX 6099) 1966 UK *

Revellers, The

This British beat outfit isn’t quite as memorable as a lot of their native counterparts, mainly due to several slow cuts that sound deep-voiced, churchy, and traditional, even with the electric guitar and organ.  Fortunately there are still a fair share of upbeat cuts gleefully rumbling along to that familiar jangly UK ‘60s groove.  ‘We Shall Not Be Moved’, ‘Believe, Believe’, ‘I Saw The Light’, ‘Love Is The Greatest Thing’ and ‘The Hammer Song’ (aka ‘If I Had A Hammer’) from the debut all fall into this category.  Says on the back that they started as a Belfast church youth group in 1964, performed with The Joy Strings in Scotland, and had an independent TV show in Northern Ireland called ‘Epilogue’.     (The Archivist, 4th edition by Ken Scott).
