The Fellowship Of The Mystery (Herald HRS 5329) 1975

I certainly didn’t expect much of this one given the bland husband-and-wife-with-guitar cover, plus the fact that it was on the Herald label. Although there are a few mellow throwaways here, Bob and Maxine Johnson along with guitarist David Rowe often craft a surprisingly solid rural rock edge. Rowe’s electric guitar gets some noteworthy attention, soloing out in front on the organ-backed ‘Spread Your Wings’, or carried by mellotron on the moody ‘Centurion’s Song’. ‘Pave The Way’ cruises along with a good country rock clip and nice banjo accompaniment. And you certainly can’t lose with a cover of Petra’s ‘Lucas McGraw’. Produced by Erv Lewis.      (The Archivist, 4th edition by Ken Scott).

This one was on the Heavenly Grooves blog.
