JESUsingers (The Light LP-4001) 1972?
The Houston, Texas trio of Wendy Rodes, Doug Coppock, and Sunny Phillips utilizes the familiar format of two acoustic guitars and an upright bass. That line-up usually indicates a simple folk album, and that’s exactly what we have here. One of the things that sets these folks apart is that all twelve songs are originals (all composed by Doug), so that instead of the umpteenth remake of ‘Sinner Man’ and ‘Very Last Day’, we get to hear fresh titles like ‘I’m Not Looking For A Hole In The Ground’, ‘Like The Wind’, ‘Stranger From Galilee’, ‘Judgement Is Coming Soon’ and ‘All Fall Down’. Plus it’s not every day you get to see a gal plucking on a string bass (not to mention the gals’ hip mini-skirt and boots). Good mix of fast-strummed numbers, ballads and in-between moods. Add a bit of tambourine here and there and you’ve got your basic coffee-house folk sound. Speaking of which, the front cover shows the group in concert at The Door, a Houston coffee-house run by Teen Liberators where the group often performed. Custom pressing – no relation to the better-known Light label. (The Archivist by Ken Scott, 4th Edition).
