Preserves (Listen LF 2001) 1972?

Preserves funneled more bucks into the production, thereby broadening their folky style to also reach into light rock/MOR. By this time they were also writing more of their own songs. I know most collectors don’t get too excited about MOR bands (this listener included) and a lot of the songs on this and the subsequent albums don’t particularly get me moving, but on the occasion when they do score a melodic winner these folks are downright precious. Standouts include ‘Psalm 84’, ‘The Sun & The Rain’ (a charming melancholy ballad) and ‘Preserves And Jam In E Minor’ (a short acoustic instrumental that opens and closes the lp). Also includes faithful renditions of two Children Of The Day songs: ‘Jesus’ and ‘Jesus Lives’. (The Archivist by Ken Scott, 4th Edition).
