Maranatha Jesus Viene Vol 1 (La Voz JV-O78) 1973 Mexico *
Positively the most groovinest Mexican psychedelic go-go outfit around! From Monterrey, Mexico come these four young Jesus-lovin’ hombres delivering generous portions of wah-wah guitar backed by a cranked-up cheesy ’60s organ – and they do it on practically every cut! Even with the language barrier you’re bound to recognize a few tunes like Love Song’s ‘Maranatha’ (done with an irresistible go-go beat), the garagy cover of ‘Somos Uno En EI Espiritu’ (‘We Are One In The Spirit’), and Gaither’s ‘EI Rey Ya Viene’ (‘The King Is Coming’), all in a way you’ve never heard them before. About half the album’s songs are ballads but even they get the psychy effects, like ‘Sodoma Y Gomorra’. Only ‘La Manana Gloriosa’ has a truly Mexican feel to it. Vuelve A Nacer’ closes the Ip with an explosion of joyous fuzz guitar. Some great rudimentary guitar solos. Spanish sleeve notes mention that they had some representation in San Antonio, Texas. Cool lookin’ plaid pants and jackets. You can just feel the joy flowing here I love these guys! (Ken Scott – The Archivist).
