Mary Called Jeanie Greene (Elektra EKS-74103) 1971

Muscle Shoals and black gospel influences are spread all over this mainstream big-label release. Jeanie sings, wrote several of the songs (‘Yes, I Do Understand’, ‘Peter, Put Away Your Sword’, ‘Pre-Recognition’ and ‘You Know Who You Are’), arranged a few others and contributes piano. She’s got this husky Janice Joplin growl that I wish we could have heard more of (I’d love to hear her do some rock and roll). The cover has a small cut-out window in the center revealing a picture of Jeanie on the inner sleeve. (Ken Scott – Archivist).
