The New Californians (Tempo TL 7032) 1972?
One of them co-ed “now sounds” deals with the typical blather about “young people doing their own thing in their own way”. Much as I hate to admit it, there are some real doozies here that send me straight off into elevator muzak bliss. ‘Is There Really A God?’ absolutely nails it with that crooning EZ-bossa-nova groove, while ‘I’ toys around with some wild Farfisa organ. Ultra-billowy harmonies, soft puffy horns, jazz-Lite electric piano – so sickeningly un-hip that it comes full circle into the realm of the groovy and now. Well, sort of anyway. Whatever. Keep it next to that equally schmaltzy Goin’ Somewhere by the Young And Free. (Ken Scott – Archivist).
